Bordeaux
Utilizing a square template with hardwood positioned to create a sophisticated and upscale look, the Bordeaux pattern comes in many variations.
Numerous colors and textures can be used to manufacture one-of-a-kind looks that will add elegance to any space. Using an updated palette allows for a more contemporary result while appreciating that old-world charm.
Chevron
When it comes to hardwood, a Chevron pattern is an excellent arrangement for wood surfaces. This traditional design, first appearing in the late 14th century, features a continuous zig zag pattern. Although this design has been seen for hundreds of years, it still provides a fresh and unique look when applied to hardwood.
Some people like to mirror the pattern in the middle of the design to create an “X” shape with the wide planks of wood. This minor touch adds a little something extra, transforming the traditional into a slightly more modern option.
It’s easy to confuse Chevron with Herringbone. Chevron zig zags are continuous, whereas Herringbone has a broken zig zag look. Technically speaking, the end of hardwood planks used for Chevron designs are cut at a 45-degree angle and installed to form a “V” shape.
Haddon Hall
The Haddon Hall pattern is another example of squares being used in a unique and intricate method. Rectangular hardwood planks are arranged in such a way as to create an unlimited number of squares, from small to large.
Herringbone
Similar in style to Chevron, a Herringbone pattern also has a zig zag layout of the hardwood planks. The main difference between the two designs is that the planks used for Herringbone are cut at the ends with a traditional square look. When the wooden planks are pieced together, it creates a 90-degree angle.
The name is the result of a resemblance to the bones of a fish, such as herring.
When the same shade of planks are used, the floor will look uniform from a distance. Varying colors can also be utilized, creating a distinctive floor pattern.
Installing hardwood in such a way can be challenging for some. If the subfloor is not perfectly flat, lining up all the rows of wood can be difficult. Even small mistakes can be quite obvious, so extra care must be taken when executing this style.
Marie Antoinette
Named after the wife of Louis XIV, it is similar to the Versailles pattern. The main difference between the two is that the Marie Antoinette look does not have a border.
This design typically has a centrally located starting point with the pattern expanding outward until the floor has been completely covered. Sometimes called a basket weave, it is recommended to have a very skilled craftsman install this highly complex option.
Versailles
A Versailles pattern is a geometric design that features elegant patchwork. It is bound to make a grand statement in any room.
Although most Versailles patterns have a similar appearance, minor differences in design can be added to create unique looks. This option works great for covering entire spaces or used as an accent.
This pattern is named after the complex floors featured in the medieval Palace of Versailles.
